Halloween doesn’t always mean something horrifyingAliens and science fiction can make for some of the best Halloween related stories! If you enjoy nostalgic romps through the 80s, that hearken back to stories like The Goonies, E.T., or (more recently) Stranger Things, you should check out Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughn.
This comic begins in the early hours after Halloween 1987. We are quickly introduced to the protagonists, a group of paper girls, working together to deliver their routes, while dealing with the Halloween addled crazies that come with that time of the year. Very quickly, our intrepid protagonists meet with a much bigger threat…from outer space!
Brian K. Vaughn is well known for his compelling and interesting characters; he does not disappoint with Paper Girls. Each of the girls—Erin, Mac, Tiffany, and K.J.---have their own personalities and distinct voices.
The artwork does not disappoint. Cliff Chiang’s pencils are very well thought out and have a unique style that fits the nostalgic setting. The vivid use of color by Matt Wilson makes each page delightful to look at, and extenuates just how wonderful this form of media can be.
In short, Paper Girls is a series that provides mystery, excellent character development, and a compelling story. It is another example of Brian K. Vaughn’s writing that makes you want to read more! The artwork is stunning! You can find volume one of Paper Girls on the money back guarantee rack!
